However, I figured this would be the best forum to view our kitchen renovation. We began this journey on 6/1/13 and officially finished today 7/28/13.

So let's start with a few before's so everyone can understand the drastic change.

So there you have it folks. That was my kitchen once we cleaned everything out. It was very green, and pretty dark. I would be lieing though if I said I didn't love my old kitchen. It was cute, and a little kitschy and part of me will always love it. Cute as it was, it wasn't functional. The drawers had no gliders they were just wood on wood. The cabinets were too low to put anything under them, the list goes on and on.

A few more pictures when the stuff was in it. Please ignore the dirty dishes. I actually took these before photos quite a while ago.

So if you are walking in my kitchen. The stove is immediately to your left, you would be facing the window and sink head on. The fridge faces the stove. This is a small kitchen folks. We work with what we got.

So before the big reveal. Let's do some in progress photos, shall we. I mean what is the point if I don't make you suffer a little bit with me.

Demo had begun, Andrew did most of the work as is usually the case around our house.

That is what was left once we pulled out the cabinets. Now let's just do a friendly reminder here, my kitchen had the original 1945 cabinets. So as you can see from the outlines on the wall this stuff was old. What you may also be noticing is there is no drywall behind my cabinets. They were attached to the concrete itself. Queue the real fun beginning.

Andrew in the process of removing the 5 layers of floor we had. It was a little nuts. Below is the original floor on top of the original wood flooring. Pretty I know!
An exhausted Roo, he worked so hard that first night. The sad part is that wasn't the worst of it. The ceiling became the deal breaker.

So I don't have a photo of the original ceiling. It had these panels on it, that the previous owner had put up. These tin panels and they were cute, but oh man oh man. They were glued onto our plaster ceilings. Let's just say sanding and patching became Andrew life for the next month, and dust became the every day thing you lived in.

So for the next few days we had to build a wall and dry wall. On top of that we were supposed to have our electrical done that saturday. Didn't happen so that put everything back, so began the waiting game.

Now another friendly reminder folks. I work from home which means I lived this 100% of the time. 14 days with no working sink.... no fun.

Then it started to get better! Queue the cabinets going in.

I was very excited as you can clearly tell. Moby however, wanted to know what was in the drawers that had no counter top. He wasn't impressed.

From there it was floor install, followed shortly by granite that went in and then had to be torn out 5 days later as it was cut wrong. That was really fun.
With the floors and the granite in (the correct granite is shown above) we were then able to finish the electrical and put in the appliances. That right there my friends is the first dishwasher this house has ever had, and I am pretty sure it is really happy.

After that we went on vacation, because we freaking needed one. Then came the final push. We had to get a backsplah put in. We went with honeycomb shaped penny round style tile and we love it. It's the only thing I picked out in the kitchen. Andrew did the rest. (I know that is a crappy photo, but it shows the tile well).
This would be the first time a microwave has ever actually been in this kitchen before as well. Previously it was in our dining room, because the cabinets were only 10 inches high and microwave couldn't fit under that.
So there you have it folks. Our kitchen reno in a nutshell. We did not hire a contractor, Andrew did most of the crazy stuff. If you are in Richmond and want to know names of companies we found to do things like the electrical/flooring/cabinets etc. just give me a shout.

Now take a few minutes and compare the old to the new. It's a little bit nuts. Oh hell, here is a compare photo just for kicks.

Kind of crazy right?!?!!

So I hope you enjoyed the kitchen reno journey!

So I recently bought these head band thingies that have a metal piece in them so you can keep the shape. Yep, safe to say I am kind of in love with them. I know I know I look amazing. I can't seem to fend off all these compliments you keep throwing my way. Okay so maybe you just like me for my awesome sauce Bonlook glasses. Either way, your a gem for reading this rinky dink little blog of mine.
Well folks, it's true there was a toilet in my backyard for quite awhile. What started out as a simple clogged toilet turned into a plumbing nightmare. This is the part when you think to yourself... where the F is my landlord. Oh wait, I bought this damn thing I have to deal with this on my own. Total B.S. if you ask me. Regardless of how I feel about it. We had to tear up our front yard and replace the the pipe under our house. What was a simple toilet clog turned into roots in our line, that led to discovering that the whole pipe was rotted out. I won't lie I cried.... multiple times.

After my breakdowns, and the money was shelled out. It took 3 days to get it all done. The yard is back together but I think a few of our bushes bit it when they got torn up. Oh well, a few bushes in turn for not dumping sewage under my house is a small price to pay. Next step address the bathroom.... who's stupid idea was it to buy a house. I think that person needs their ass kicked.
I love when the mister gets excited about something and makes dinner. We grew some eggplants in our summer garden this year, and Andrew got could not wait to make something with the eggplant, so we attempted this eggplant parm. Let's just say if you want to know what a car tire tastes like, give this recipe a try. It looks tasty, but it tasted....rough. I felt bad because he worked so hard. However, we both agree car tire eggplant no bueno. Yep, that's right folks today I turn 28.... good lord that's 2 years short of 30. Where did the time go? When I look around the home I own and think about the last 5, 8, or 10 years I am amazed at how much my life has changed and where I am today. If someone had told me I would be living in Virginia married to a tall tall man and working in IT.... I would have laughed in their face. However, here I am doing all of those things. Well folks, I am off to pack for a trip with my ladies and to enjoy my day. Have a great weekend.

So I know in the grand world of blogging, when you propose doing a DIY project. You photograph your supplies, and show yourself in the process of doing the project. However, traditional is not how I fly. So what you get here in this little DIY post is a list of what I used and the finished product. I feel that should be sufficient considering how easy this project is.

Supplies:
Starbucks mug with removal insert. They do not make these any longer, but you an still get them online.
Colored glitter... I went girly girl here, but any color will do.
Paint brush
Modge podge

Instructions:
Take out the insert part. Paint the inside of the main tumbler with modge podge. Dump a bunch of glitter in the cup. Shake it around until it is all covered. Let it dry. Voila. Now you have a blinged out Starbucks tumbler. Fun, easy, and adds a little sparkle to your day.

XOXO

It's been awhile since I shared some good and well strange moments in my life. Thought it was a good time to do that.

The Flops:

Walking into the kitchen with a dirty dish from some very intersting tasting red velvet ice cream, and opening the fridge to place the dirty dish inside. I did manage to stop myself, but obviously the ice cream wasn't that satisfying if I headed straight for the fridge.

Ummm... major flop, developing an ulcer at the ripe old age of 27. I mean what is that. Whatever... so pepto and I will be getting up close and personal.

Re-painting the living room a lighter grey than was originally there. Only to discover in some light it looks purple. Well, whatevs folks, I like purple and will be damned if I am going to paint it again.

The Tops:

Sending the mister to Target to return something and he returns with the spoonula thingy you were talking about the other day. Awesome sauce!

Drinking beer in bed with a great book on a Sunday afternoon... yes folks that's what those photos mean. I think beer in bed is better than anywhere else.

Getting my kitty cat home from the vet, and knowing he will be just fine. Poor thing was in a lot of pain, but $600 some odd dollars later he is a-ok.... for now.

Let's all make our day a little bit brighter, and create rainbow flowers. What do you say? I always like to have flowers either in the house or more specifically in my office. I think rainbow flowers would make that day even better.

So I know that the Olympics started over a week ago, but I figure better late than never. The fridge is sharing its support just like the rest of us. Have you been watching? We have been watching recaps on the news, but not the events. Seems whenever I have time and want to watch it is always tennis that is on. No offense to those that play and watch, but that's not interesting to me. I want to watch monkey arms Phelps, or those crazy muscly gymnastics.

Either way....go U.S.A!Emilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703416163430710439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9072894316027191857.post-15727038128613744282012-08-06T12:52:00.002-04:002012-08-06T12:52:25.848-04:00Pretty Girl

When we went home to TN for our July 4th holiday. I found this pretty little picture down in the old city. She reminded me of myself when I was a little girl, and the little kitty cat reminds me of my Moby. I think this is my all time favorite thrifting find to date.

*Side note, my poor Moby is a mess. He started acting erratic last night and then letting you touch him then hiding. We finally decided to take him to the vet (the ER vet at 10 at night). They said his pipes were back up, gave him a laxative and sent us home. Well he is still acting strange today, so back to the vet I go. I feel like such a bad mama. Now now, I know your brain automatically went to the extremely popular smut novel. Alas... this post is actually about the color grey.

When we first moved into our home we painted our living room a fairly dark shade of grey. It was fine at first, but 2 years later I am starting to feel closed in. Our living room doesn't have a whole lot of light and the color just makes the room so dark.
So this weekend we will be re-painting (the mister doesn't know that yet) with a lighter shade. I like the choices above. I think the 1 in the middle is really nice. Doesn't have those green under tones. We will see what I actually find when I hit the paint store. Never know what it will look like in real lighting.
I started sharing books here so I could share books I love with you all and pass around great authors, but in this instance I am sharing a poor review. I started reading the Sookie Stackhouse novels a few years ago and loved them in the beginning. However, this is the 12th installment of this series and let's just say that Charlaine must be running out of material.

This thing dragged on and on and on. There was a point when I just thought it can't get any worse, and then she kept beating this dead horse. I finally had to shelf the stupid thing and walk away. I am saddened by this. Since I have so enjoyed her books in the past. Although I could understand if she is just plain bored with Sookie. I mean how much can really happen?!?! So it saddens me to advise you to steer clear of this Sookie book and move on . It's time to find a new vampire love story...maybe even something without vampires. I mean, I can't be alone in being so over vampire stories I am in Canada...

*Cheers*

I dwell.... major confession here folks. I dwell on so many things. Particularly negative things. I let them fester and control my every day happiness. It is so dumb I cannot even explain it well. This is something that I have learned over time from experiences in my life, but I am working really hard to unlearn them. I want to go forward not fester and rot on the past. I can't change that. I can change how I handle those situations going forward. It is completely in my control how I react and respond to myself and others.

If you are anything like me, don't let the past hold you back from your own happiness. Whether that is with your family, husband, weight loss journey, or friendships. You have COMPLETE control over what you do and how you react. Liberating isn't it.

So the next time someone says to you..."you make me feel this way!" laugh it off because the truth is... you cannot make anyone feel anything. They take in what you do & say, and feel however they are going to. It's time to own that people!
My parents have a lake place in Norris TN. So usually when I go to TN to see them I just go their and stay there. This time though, we ventured into Knoxville my hometown and walked around. It has been a long time since I have been home and I have to say I missed that city.
We ventured to my old watering hole... well my place of employment for several years...Barley's and right down the street was this amazing little record/vintage store. I scored a pretty skirt, a stool, and fabulous painting. Roo, got a zillion records... okay more like 10.

We spent the rest of the trip on the boat, at the lake, at the pool, or just in a drunken stupor. Our livers needed a break after our trip, but I had such a blast. A much needed vaca!
I have to say I LOVE this picture. These are the 2 best men I have ever known in my life. My amazing father (the foobs) and my incredible husband. They are peas in a pod...well minus that height difference. They are both so a like yet so different. I love them dearly!

So there you have it folks, that is my July 4th and my summer vacation wrapped up in one post.
XOXOEmilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703416163430710439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9072894316027191857.post-20048606924888711382012-07-19T06:06:00.000-04:002012-07-19T06:06:19.409-04:00Greatest Cake EverFolks you are in for a treat. I am going to share the recipe for this utterly decadent and amazing cake with you today. It is a total bitch to make and takes the better part of a day, but I swear on my granny's grave (it's her recipe) you will never eat another cake this good. So get out your pens... or just hit print. This is worth having.

GERMAN SWEET CHOCOLATE CAKE:
1 package (4 oz) baker's german's sweet chocolate
1/2 cup of water
2 cups of flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 egg yolks
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
4 egg whites

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line bottoms of 3 9" round cake pans with wax paper (or just spray with pam, I never use the wax paper)
Microwave chocolate with water in large microwavable bowl on high 1.5 to 2 minutes... stir until chocolate is completely melted. (you can heat on the stove top too just stir constantly till the chocolate melts)
Mix flour, baking soda, salt and set aside. Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in chocolate mixture and vanilla. Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating after each addition until smooth.
Beat egg whites in a large bowl with electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form. Gently stir into batter. Pout into prepared pans. Bake 30 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly touched in center. Cool for 15 minutes, remove from pans. Continue cooling on wire racks.

CREAMY CHOCOLATE ICING:

1 cup of softened butter
2 lbs of confectioners sugar
2 Tbsp of evaporated milk (or as much as you need to make the icing creamy, I usually use about a 1/4 a cup when it's all said and done)
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
2 squares of unsweet chocolate (from a 10oz baker's square box)
2 squares of semi sweet chocolate (from a 10oz baker's square box)

Cream the butter. Gradually add the sugar, beating well after each add. Stir in the rest of the ingredients and mix until smooth. Again if it is like a giant fudge ball, add more evaporated milk. (I didn't do that the first time I mad it and it was unspreadable.... remember last Thanksgiving.

Well folks there you have it. A storm blew threw about 2 weeks ago. Some say it was a tornado but who knows. All I can say is I stood upstairs in my home, and watched our beautiful tree snap in half. It was a split second and it was gone. I think the storm lasted all of 15 minutes. It blew 42 power circuits in 45 minutes and took half my pretty tree. As of right now we have managed to keep the front half, but let's just say the thing looks sparse and my pretty backyard lights are no more.

Now I have complained my fair share about losing this tree, cried even. However, I am not going to do that now. Because there are people in CO who lost everything not just so tree. So it's a loss but one I can survive. I will say this though, the weather and I are not friends. Mother nature... it's me Emily... I hear what you are saying, but could we cool it for the rest of the summer. I don't want to go 7 days without power again this summer!

How are you my measly few readers? Have you had any crazy weather? or crazy anything happen lately?
XOEmilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703416163430710439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9072894316027191857.post-80660709571276080772012-07-06T07:28:00.004-04:002013-07-29T12:04:09.658-04:00I am alive, not that you askedOkay so blogging has not been a top priority for me. Hell, I haven't even thought about it. I have this job, ya know those things that help you pay your bills, and it has been crazy. Then a tree came down in our backyard. Like the tree that I love, and that my whole backyard is designed around. So that put a me in a crappy mood. Then we went without power. I could continue to whine, but then we would all need to get out some cheese to really enjoy my complaining. So let's just say life has been crazy, and I should be back to blog about the typical B.S. in my life soon.

It is entirely possible that I obsessed with Lana Del Ray!Her voice is like heaven and her music is just killer. When she sings it reminds me of getting lost on a summer day. Maybe that makes no sense to some of you and makes me sound like an LSD user, but I promise it is a feeling.

On top of her rock star music she has a rock star style. She is channeling a band aid from Almost famous here I feel. Even though she is the rock star. I hope this song gets your Tuesday off too a soulful start.

So the first year we tried, but failed. Maybe the soil was wrong, maybe we planted them at the wrong time, or maybe we didn't whisper enough sweet somethings to them. No matter the reason we didn't get much except cucumbers. This year however, our garden is over flowing and we are super excited.
We have 2 tomato plants. A cherry tomato and something called the home wrecker. Those haven't come in yet, but we have already started to enjoy the cherry ones. There is little jar on the window sill full of plump red tomatoes just waiting to be eaten.

I think growing my own vegetables has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. Now they would not be growing at all if it weren't for the misters green thumb but either way there is pure satisfaction when you pick something from your own garden to eat.Emilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703416163430710439noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9072894316027191857.post-32832859263463954872012-06-08T08:16:00.000-04:002012-06-08T08:16:27.529-04:00self portrait

I was enjoying the lovely sweet southern air in my backyard awhile back and snapped this little picture with my phone. The sun flare caught perfectly and I have to say this might be one of my favorite self portraits. Not just because of the pretty sun, but at that moment in my life I was content in my backyard enjoying time with myself.

I believe time with yourself is important. Not just time when you are in a room alone with 10 electronic devices working to distract you, but time where you are with you. Where you unplug and think about things that make you happy and what you need to do for yourself. Don't ever forget how important you are!!
In my backyard we have this crazy big tower thing that stacks on top of itself. Each year we pack it full of as many flower pots as it will hold. This is a shot of it's current state this year. I just love all the colors against the brick wall. Just another little shot of my backyard to go along with this post.

I would also just like to add the only reason these things will survive this summer is due to the husband. I pretty much kill all plants I pot myself. I can't figure it out I swear I water and give them all the love I can come up with. I even talk to those bastards and they just die off....JERKS!

I have a confession to make. I have been thinking about having kids for awhile now. It is something that I think about pretty often lately. I am not sure what triggered this feeling, maybe my biological clock that everyone talks about has finally started. I still don't think we are ready, but I think about it.

As I look up at these pictures and think...well I have kids those little furry creatures are my babies I think there has to be something more. As I think about my life and where it has gone in the last year or so I think about what I want in life and what would fulfill me. I also think am I ready to change my life and never look back. My mom always reminds me not to romanticize children. They are work and not always fun and cute. I know all these things so I have to ask myself am I ready?? I don't know, I suppose that answers it for me doesn't it.

All seriousness aside, our current kids would not be happy to have some smelly crying thing crawling around I can just picture the death glares from Moby now.
The other day I decided I do the same shit everyday. I work my ass off for 10 hours in front of a computer, only to turn it off and turn on the television. This is just stupid. There are so many other things that I used to love to do. Crafty type things. So I decided screw TV I am going to make something. I had been wanting to try my hand at these little guys so I did just that.

After taking a good 30 minutes to remember how in the hell to thread my sewing machine, I got to work making my own little fox pillow. Okay so the fabric I chose is a little tripy but try not to stare too long. Isn't he cute?!?! We (by we I mean me and the cat) have named him Marvin and he is hanging out in the guest room ready to welcome whoever comes to visit.
So this past memorial day weekend the mister and I were lucky little bitches. We had the opportunity of a free place to stay with some family in the outer banks. On top of that free place to stay which was beyond sweet. It just so happened that our bestest of friends from home would be in the same place at the same time. I mean I don't think we could make that work out again if we tried. Which in this instance....we didn't try. So here are some photos from the incredible outer banks of North Carolina.

The outer banks are an incredible place. It's a strip of land that has the ocean on 1 side and a sound on the other. It's a small strip where you are water locked. It was truly beautiful!

Me enjoying the last moments of our long weekend. It was truly a lovely weekend. An escape that was much needed. I unplugged to best of my ability and only checked my work blackberry twice, for me that's a big deal. I will be making trips to the outer banks again that is for sure, maybe if the stars align correctly again I can get their with my amazing friends! Did you do anything awesome sauce over the long weekend. Drunken stupors count as awesome in case you can't remember your long weekend.
I know I am a crappy blogger. I want to give you some good reason as to why I have been so flaky as a blogger but truth is I don't have one. So no excuses, but here is a my most recent doodle on our chalkboard fridge. Since memorial day was Monday and that is the unofficial start of summer. Our fridge got pretty excited! Hope you had a lovely holiday last weekend and have some rad plans for this weekend.
